The Breendonk wall @ Antwerp

Fort Breendonk organised a unique happening in commemoration of the 3,600 political prisoners held at the Fort. The event is closely linked to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a subject the Fort feels very strongly about.

On Saturday 14 December the Breendonk wall was to be seen at the Steen in Antwerp. Four to six men (and women) ‘symbolically’ faced the wall for hours on end, stripped of their human rights.

The mobile wall refers to the 3,600 political prisoners who were locked up in Fort Breendonk during the Second World War. They were subjected to forced labour, deprivation, abuse and manipulation.

In Breendonk human rights were considered insignificant.

The horror of Breendonk must never be forgotten, especially not today, when discrimination, racism and polarisation burden society. The Fort provides a stark reminder of the past and underscores the importance of remaining vigilant whenever human rights are involved. This is more relevant than ever before.
